Example Consulting Projects

Examples of actual consulting duties performed

  Consulting History

Part Time: 1993-1995

Full-Time: 1995 - Present

Ø 3-Board Process Control System

Hardware redesign of outdated (1978) control system for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) Geothermal plant in Middleton, CA. The system consisted of three separate modules interacting in 160 separate control loops. Included A/D, D/A, isolated AC relay control, RS-485, lamp drivers, optically- isolated and high current digital design. Improved overall system quality by reducing power consumption to 25% and improving manufacturing ease. Reduced system cost by reducing IC count using programmable logic devices.

Software included visual programming package allowing users to draw logic diagrams which are automatically translated into Z80 native code and burned directly into system.

Ø PWM Interface Board

PIC controller based design of interface board for the high-resolution acquisition of linear position transducer PWM data as well as A/D conversion. Included PIC software design in assembly and master controller drivers in C. Expansion software written to provide a very open-ended command driven interface.

Ø Custom RS-485 Triple Repeater Module

Custom design for integration into an industrial apparatus for the laser-cutting of contoured metal. Allows one RS-485 node to communicate with up to 3072 other nodes. Performed design, managed manufacturing, and delivered working product to customer for immediate use. Managed assembly and production testing of units for customer to assure quality and expedite delivery.

Ø Microwave Power Supply Control System

Microcontroller hardware and software design for process control in microwave power supplies used in silicon fabrication systems. Included hardware design of a 2-board system performing a multitude of system tasks including: 10-bit A/D conversions, PWM D/A conversion, opto-isolated digital, RS-232, LCD interface, AC/DC conversion, SCR conditioning, zero-cross detect logic, etc.

Ø Optical Lens Bonding Machine Software

Embedded software redesign C for Optical lens bonding machine. Included background tasking for the control of pneumatic valves and sensor interfaces. Integrated software with other consultant's work. Also included stepper-motor and vacuum fluorescent display control.

Ø Keytrackerä Inventory Tracking Machine

Designed hardware and software for commercial inventory tracking machine now sold as a commercial product by Inventory Science Systems, Inc. Includes battery-powered hardware design, custom data compression, high-speed keyscanning, and complex error recovery. MJS Consulting also provided injection molded case design, custom key design, and managed initial production.

Academic Design Projects

1990 - Masters Project

Hardware and software for a i80286 demonstration board with an i80287 coprocessor. The on-board I/O included various switches and LEDs, one RS-232 serial port, and two bidirectional 8-bit parallel ports. The board was instructive in teaching basic embedded computer concepts as well as internal operation of the coprocessor. A monitor was included so that assembly code could be executed with the benefit of breakpoints, single-stepping, register dumping/modification, memory dumping/modification; with added feature of observation of the internal state of the coprocessor.

1988 - Senior Project

Hardware and software for a MC6809 based computer with 10-bit A/D, switch inputs, LEDs, serial port, and bidirectional parallel ports. Assembly language software was written to demonstrate the board's functionality. Board was for IEEE Micro-Mouse competition.

1987 - Software Design Project

The design of an IBM360 assembler/simulator. It assembled assembly language programs and provided full execution trace information. Written in interpreted BASIC on a Commodore 64 with a 32K memory expansion (Ah,those were the days....).
